An Adventure in the World of Art
Written by Kirstan and Teresa Lin
Photographs taken by Kirstan and Teresa Lin

Last week Kirstan Lin and I, Teresa Lin, students in the 5th and 6th grade class at Pacific Horizons School, went to the Jean P. Haydon Museum in Pago Pago to see the exhibition of student artwork. We did not want to miss this opportunity to observe and appreciate the creativity and talent of our peers. Schools from all over American Samoa contributed their best student-produced art that included sketches, paintings, handicrafts and other forms of art. Kirstan and I took photographs of the ones we thought were the best. After taking pictures, we also added some of their thoughts about the art we admired.

The following pictures have been selected by Kirstan.

Artist: Meredith DeWees
Level: 5
School: Pacific Horizons School
I thought this fantastic picture looked so fancy because the sun was shining out of the sky. I liked the way the sun was shining out of the sky because it blended in with the sky.

Artist: Daniel Saufo’i
School: SPICC
Level: 6
I thought this picture was very neat because this person put so much detail into his work, it was neat because he outlined it in black so that it’s easy to see.

Artist: Lela Nomura
Level: 7
School: Pacific Horizons School
I thought this picture was very amazing because it looked so old fashioned but in the good way; it looked old fashioned because it was all done in black and white.

The next few picure selections were selected by Teresa.

Name: Jordan Miliao
Grade: Five
School: Pavai'ia'i Elementary
I like the painting because it's nice and enjoyable because of its many attractive colors, and the design looks like it has flowers and fire around it.

Name: Josephine Leota/Mome Pulemagafa/Tai
Grade: Six
School: Olomoana Elementary
I like the painting because it is interesting. The artist used a lot of colors and it looks like the stained-glass windows of a church.

Name: Petelo Sio
Grade: Five
School: Pavai'ia'i Elementary
Why I like the drawing: I like it because it's very attractive, and it looks very real because there are a lot of colors in the sky like there are at sunset.

That concludes what we are showing in this entry I hope you enjoyed it, and remember that this is only some of the amazing artwork at the museum. Go and see for your self if you want. It's awesome.

HI!!! I'm the shorty, and my name is Dylan Willis. I did my project on how far a toy car can go at different angles. The reason I did this project is because my brother did this project and I wanted to learn more about it. My favorite part of my project was messuring how far the car went. What I liked most about the Science Fair was learning that I am going to the Territorial Science Fair.

My name is Kirstan Lin. I did my project on how an egg would shrink if the egg shell was off. I did this project because I was curious on how the egg would shrink. My favorite part was doing the expirement. My favorite part of the Science Fair was presenting it to the judges.

Hi, my name is Kimberley. My project is about the affects of blood pressure when listening to music. The reason I did this project, was because I thought it was very interesting. My favorite part of my project was testing people. My favorite part of the Science Fair was winning even though I can't go to the Territorial Science Fair...

WE LOVE MUSIC!
By Davalynn Betham, Lauren Folau, Aleah Cunningham and the Adventurers’ Class

The award season is upon us, and it’s time to pull out the big guns: The Grammys and the Academy Awards. Members of the Adventurers’ class at Pacific Horizons School took this opportunity to find out more about the Grammy Awards and the artists who are nominated for awards this year. We also put our math skills to work and found out which song students at our school thought should win Record of the Year.

The Grammys were awarded on 8th February, 2006.

Grammy Fun Facts

  • The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Inc. was created in 1957.
  • There are over 20,000 members of the Academy today.
  • The first Annual Grammy Awards began in 1959.
  • The awards are named for the trophy which the winner receives - a small gilded statuette of a gramophone.
  • The eligibility period for the Grammys begins October 1 each year and ends September 30 of the following year.
  • Soul and R&B legend Aretha Franklin has won 11 awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
  • The most Grammys won in a single night is eight -- a record shared by Michael Jackson (1984), and Carlos Santana (2000).

The BIG Nominees

Mariah Carey, Kanye West, and newcomer John Legend each received eight Grammy nominations this year. Let’s get to know each artist a little better.

Biography of John Legend

John Legend (born as John Stephens) was born on December 28, 1978 in Springfield, Ohio. He grew up in Springfield, Ohio and started playing classical piano his grandmother taught him at the very young age of four. Legend attended Springfield North High School, graduating as Salutatorian at sixteen. Legend left Ohio at sixteen to go to college at the University of Pennsylvania, and it was there that he first found a larger audience.

Not yet out of his teens, Legend was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” in 1998. After completing college, he moved to New York where he began to build a loyal following playing in nightclubs and releasing CDs that he would sell at shows.

He also became an in-demand session musician, playing and occasionally writing for a wide array of artists, including Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West.

Legend was recently nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including best new artist. The awards will be held February 8, 2006.

Biography of Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York. She was the third child of Patricia Hickey and Alfred Roy Carey. Mariah attended and graduated from Oldfield Middle School and Harborsfield High School in Greenland, New York. After moving to New York City, she became a backup singer for Brenda K.Starr. In 1988, Mariah Carey became a singer because of her friend Brenda. Brenda loved Mariah’s voice and thought that it was beautiful. So she gave Tommy Mottola (an executive of Columbia Records) at a party. Tommy listened to her tape and was impressed with what he heard. He returned to the party to search for Mariah, but she had already left. Tommy tracked her down and got her to sign a Record Contract. She has since become an R&B singer and an actress.

Biography of Kanye West

Kanye West was born into a privileged family with a mother who was a doctor on June 8 in the year of 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Columbia College and Chicago State University, but he never graduated. He dropped out and started his music career. He became a co-worker with the artist Jay-Z. Jay-Z had West helped him make the album “The Blueprint”. On the album, 6 of the songs were produced by Kanye West. Kanye went on to work with other big hit artists such as Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, John Legend and many more. After assisting other artists he wanted to work on his own album. His 1st big hit album was called College Dropout. He went on to his 2nd album. Days, weeks, months went by and Late Registration came out in 2005. This was also a big hit for him. Over 904,000 copies were sold in the 1st week of it even being out. This year Kanye West received 10 Grammy Nominations. He is planning for 2 more albums to come out. One will be called “Graduation” and the other will be called “A Good Ass Job.” They will be coming out sooner or later.

Aleah, here... again... Mr. Hatcher said I could update the blog for fun if I was bored, I think that's what he said... oh well, if he didn't say that I can just delete this post.

Here's what happened today...

We got out of school early because the storm nearly took our class roof off and it was all flooded. Lots of people went home early and I was the last one inside the classroom. Staying all by myself with Mr. Hatcher's laptop, emailing Davalynn and listening to Quinn's music was pretty fun... I guess...

QUINN WAS STEALLING MY MUSIC!!!!!

No. Not really but he copied all of the songs on my MP3 player, at least, I think he copied all of them.

I forgot to bring my math homework home... and right now I'm trying to find a bottle for my Science Fair Project... I have not had any luck at all... And one of my hard boiled eggs exploded... and right now I'm listening to my mom talk on the phone... but that doesn't really matter.

I tried to put a picture on here but it takes too long on my computer... stinky computer...

And that's pretty much all I have to say...

See ya later,

Aleah
